In some ways requirements for mobile applications are just requirements. However many of the features that make mobile computing so compelling (multiple forms of connectivity, cameras, GPS, …) give rise to new requirements that we have not had to consider in traditional application delivery. Successful software projects do not just happen, they start with good analysis and design and requirements capture is an important part of that effort. In this webinar we will look at aspects of mobile applications that give rise to requirements not normally considered in traditional solutions delivery.

After spending some time where the Java language was "stuck" at Java SE 6 because of Oracle buying Sun, Java is moving forward again and companies are starting to leverage some of the new versions. Many companies are starting to move to Java SE 7 since that has been out for a few years and will be the required minimum version of Java EE 7 application servers as those are released. Java SE 8 was also recently finalized and although probably too early for many large Java projects to move to it fully it will help to know what are some of the more significant features of Java SE 8. In this webinar we will focus on the changes in Java SE 7 that projects can use when adopting this environment along with some of the significant features of Java SE 8 to watch out for as that becomes more popular.

The term “Microservice” has recently been coined to describe a rapidly provisionable, independently deployable service with narrow and distinct functionality that is accessible over common communication protocols. As is often the case with new IT technology terms, the term Microservice is viewed by many as too fuzzy and misleading similar to terms NoSQL and Big Data. In this webinar, we will try to see if we can make sense of it.

Although WebSphere Application Server is one of the most robust Java Enterprise Application Servers for deployment of mission critical applications, it is not always that easy to use in development. Often we see clients who deploy to WebSphere in production using Tomcat or some other server to test in development because it is "easier". The complaint is that the full WebSphere Application Server takes too long to start or redeploy applications and is not intuitive to configure for developers. To address these issues, IBM has created the WebSphere "Liberty Profile" server. This is a lightweight server, certified for Java EE 6, that starts much faster and is easier to configure. In this webinar we will look at the features of the WebSphere Liberty Profile server, how it compares to the "full" WebSphere Application Server, and how you can use it to simplify the development and testing of Java EE applications. We will even show that with version 8.5.5 of the WebSphere Liberty Profile there are some intriguing new features that would even let you run the server as part of a cluster and use it for some production deployment scenarios. We will also highlight the use of FREE Eclipse development tools that are available since the cost of development tools for WebSphere Application Server has also been historically an issue.

Although many companies would like to improve their business processes when it comes down to how to do that things can get off track. Often this can be because they are using a tool or platform that doesn’t really support the correct methodology that should be employed for process improvement. For those that are using IBM's Business Process Manager platform (or would like to), there is support for doing things the "right way". The platform allows business analysts and others with information about the business process itself to effectively capture this knowledge without programming skill. Those tasked with implementing the process can then come in and use the same process model to fill in the details of how it will work. During this webinar we will take a look at the IBM BPM platform and the various tasks to perform to implement a process. We will also focus on the methodology that should be used, often referred to as the "playback methodology" in IBM documentation and Redbooks that helps make sure these efforts at process improvement are successful.

Continuous Integration is a software development approach that uses ?build automation? to automatically build and test software. With Continuous Integration, there is always an up-to-date version of the software available to run quality assurance tests and conduct sample deployments, and any problems accidentally introduced by developers can be seen quickly. The automation involved also provides a convenient spot to implement quality assurance tools like automated unit testing, code coverage testing, static code analysis, style checking, and so on. This webinar will discuss some common tools and plugins for Apache Maven that are useful for Continuous Integration, and present a useful pattern for establishing a Continuous Integration server combined with a Maven Repository Manager. The webinar will appeal to all developers working with Java technologies, and in particular to those using Apache Maven or the Jenkins Continuous Integration server.

Arguably, the Backbone.js library and the Angular.js framework are the two most popular JavaScript libraries/frameworks for building Single Page Applications. For principled technical reasons, many JavaScript developers tend to prefer one library/framework while opposing the other. In this webinar, we will examine the strengths and weaknesses of each of these JavaScript approaches to building a Single Page Application. We will aim to help dispel some of the misconceptions about each of these approaches and identify how each approach can be useful to solve specific problems. Also, we will be using a Node.js backend to power our demonstrations including a quick run-through with Browserify to demonstrate how to organize Backbone.js and Angular.js web applications into Node.js modules.
